After completing my undergraduate degree at RMIT University, majoring in biological sciences, I undertook my Honours degree at the University of Tasmania. My honours project investigated the genetics of an Australia squid and began my interest in population genetics. Following this I spent a number of years working as a research assistant in both genetic and ecology roles, gaining experience in a range of molecular biology techniques as well as an insight into ecological modelling. Most recently I worked as a research assistant to the Conservation Geneticist at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Here I was involved in projects investigating population genetics and structure of threatened Australian plants using a number of molecular markers including microsatellites and ISSRs as well as DNA sequencing of chloroplast regions.
I am an ecological / population geneticist at heart with an interest in the effect of fragmentation on genetics. Particularly, I am interested in what effect fragmentation may have on connectivity, structure and ultimately adaptive potential, and what this means for the long-term persistence of habitat remnants. My PhD project combines these interests, investigating the genetics of adaptation to climate change in the Grey Box Eucalypt, Eucalyptus microcarpa, across it’s distribution through the highly fragmented agricultural lands of south-eastern Australia.
