I have just started a PhD project on pest modelling in the grains industry supervised by Dr Paul Umina, Prof Ary Hoffmann and Dr Sarina Macfadyen from the CSIRO. Currently the plan is to focus on the mite establishment pests and the lucerne flea to help provide farmers with further information on when these pests will emerge from diapause and the density they are likely to emerge in, so they can manage their farms accordingly. I am hoping to also do some work on modelling the more sporadic isopod pests, the portugese millipede and the flood bug. My interests is in insects biology and how this can be used to help farmers be smarter in managing the intriguing puzzle of an agriculture system in different environmental conditions, rather than simply putting out pesticides in case there are bugs that needed to be killed.
